Mark Yudof Marries “Corporate Interests” at Sather Gate

CalSERVE Campus Mobilizers Austin Pritzkat and Devonte Jackson staged a mock wedding between UC President Mark Yudof (played by Austin) and Corporate Interests (played by Sydney Rock) at Sather Gate at noon today. The action was held in order to highlight Yudof’s and the Regents’ close relationship with corporations and corporate lobbyists, especially when deciding whether and how to fund large-scale building projects at the UC campuses, such as the controversial new hotel at UCLA and the $1 billion upgrade of Cal’s Memorial Stadium. Austin and Devonte also drew attention to increasing tuition and privatization of the UC.

After the wedding, Austin and Devonte led protestors to the steps of Sproul Hall, where they picketed in protest of a recent management decision to fire 5 Eshleman Hall workers, despite the fact that 12 service positions are currently open in other buildings on campus.

CalSERVE was joined by members of Students for a Democratic University, the Student/Worker Coalition and the union AFSCME 3299 for the action.
