ASUC Senate Votes to Oppose Sit/Lie Ordinance

October 3rd: Tonight, after a lengthy debate, the ASUC voted 18-1-1 to oppose Measure S, the “Sit/Lie” ordinance on Berkeley’s citywide November ballot. Measure S would prohibit sitting or lying on city sidewalks during the day, and impose fines and legal burdens on the city’s homeless population. CalSERVE Senator Nolan Pack introduced Senate Bill 64, the bill in opposition to Measure S, after helping to write the bill with the co-authors, co-sponsors and supporters listed here:

Co-Authors: CalSERVE Senator Nolan Pack, and Elizabeth Hennes and Caitlin Quinn of Cal Berkeley Democrats

Co-Sponsors: Cooperative Movement Senator Jorge Pacheco; SQUELCH! Senator Jason Bellet; Student Action Senator George Kadifa; Student Action Executive Vice President Justin Sayrath and Academic Affairs Vice President Natalie Gavello; CalSERVE Senators Sidronio Jacobo, Klein Lieu, Megan Majd, Donna-Jo (DeeJay) Pepito and Daley Vertiz; Osha Neumann (Consulting Attorney, East Bay Community Law Center); Patricia Wall (Executive Director, Homeless Action Center); Elisa Della-Piana (Director, Neighborhood Justice Clinic, East Bay Community Law Center); Bob Offer-Westort (Civil Rights Organizer, Coalition on Homelessness)

We would also like to extend a special thanks to the volunteers from the Suitcase Clinic who came out to the Senate meeting to support Senate Bill 64. We greatly appreciated their contribution to the debate.

Measure S threatens the civil rights and protections all people deserve to enjoy. CalSERVE urges you to vote NO on Measure S.
